Scrub Sprouts

Brandt returned home from scouts today enthusiastic to make us an after-dinner treat.  He had learned how to make them from Jennifer Hainsworth, and he was eager to share his culinary skills.  He made us "smachos," a combination of s'mores and nachos.  He told us he needed to make them in "a little thing kind of like the microwave on a tray."  After several questions we determined that he meant a toaster oven, a kitchen appliance we don't actually have.  So we said he could make them in the broiler, and he proceeded.

Smachos are made by topping quarter graham cracker pieces with a few chocolate chips and a mini marshmallow.  Then you heat them up in the toaster oven for about two minutes.  Brandt, with Blythe's help, put together a small tray of them that we slid into the oven under the broiler.  Then we began working on Blythe's spelling and I promptly forgot about them.  Some minutes later Kent said, "Do you think the smachos are done?"

"No," I replied, leaping up from the table.  "I think they are completely burned."

Yep.  Completely blackened.  They were probably under the heat for about four minutes, which was about three and a half minutes too long.  We had to start all over again.  However, I am happy to report that batch number two looked perfect after only thirty seconds under the broiler, and we were all able to enjoy our dessert.

Horray for scrub scouts!

First batch failure and second batch yumminess.
The smachos were pretty tasty too.
