Halloween-ing

October equals Halloween activities and celebrating.  I overdecorated, we over sugared, and by the end of the month, we were happy to see Halloween go.  We did do some fun things, and here are pictures to prove it.

On the 10th, Brandt and Blythe decorated gingerbread haunted houses.  I had bought these last year but we didn't get to them, so they've been in storage.  Sound icky?  It is Halloween!  The kids mushed frosting over the houses, added the candies, then almost immediately began eating the (stale) candy.  They didn't last long as decoration.  They never do.

We went to Jaker's Pumpkin Patch, but I did a separate post for that.

On October 29th, we had a DeMartini family Halloween party.  We played games, had treats, and posed in our costumes.  It was nice outside so the kids ran around (literally) and we did our games outside.  Brandt ate so much junk he threw up, but fortunately he made it to the toilet.  His serious Batman picture was taken just before he went inside to be sick.  He looks serious, and he was.  Hooray for cousin Halloween fun!

We had punch with dry ice.
Cora didn't like the fog it created.

That dimple!

Brandt has frosting on his forehead.
He's getting into it!

Cora, too!

Me as well!

Spooky!

Halloween Twister.
See Brandt's dimple?
Sure sign something's up.
Yep!
Just after I took this picture, he pushed his cousins over and won.

A serious, crusty frosting-faced Batman.

And a sweet-faced Native American with semi-authentic war paint.

I love these little people!

On the 30th, realizing we were not going to have time on carve pumpkins on Halloween and that we were running out of time to actually do it, I brought in pumpkins from the porch and we did carving.  They came together with varying levels of success.  It was fun, whatever the result.  We are certainly not Jim Cutler!

This is Blythe and Kent's pumpkin.
Blythe's first pumpkin did not turn out like she had hoped,
so after some fuss, they started over.
Kent suggested they not carve the pumpkin, but add carved pieces to it.
He's pretty funny!
Lots of people felt compelled to touch his slimy gut "hair."

Today, Halloween, the kids headed off to school in costume.  Brandt didn't want to wear his actual Batman costume because the 5th and 6th grades go roller skating and he didn't want to deal with his costume, so he wore his holey Jedi robe, a clone cadet helmet, and a Darth Vader Halloween t-shirt.  He told me he was a clone cadet graduating, but I think he was a costume bin rummager.  Whatever.  Blythe was decked out in her Indian costume, complete with self-made feathered headband, leggings, authentic jewelry she borrowed from Heidi Tanner, and war paint.  She looked great!

School was great fun.  Brandt went roller skating (no pictures--boo hoo) and Blythe participated in the costume parade.  Brick needed to get out of the house, so I took him with me to watch the kids parade past us in their fun costumes.  He liked it.  He asked me what some people were, including a kid who looked sort of like the swamp monster but told us he was a bush.  Too funny!  Both kids had a Halloween party at school.

After school we went up to BYU to Grandma Sue's office to begin our trick-or-treating.  All over the administration building, kids can trick-or-treat in offices.  We wandered around the were able to see Grandma Sue while also acquiring a fair amount of candy.  What a beginning to a busy night.

Brandt is looking about as thrilled as the actual Batman probably would.

We got home, had a bit of healthy-ish dinner, and then headed out to trick-or-treat around the neighborhood.  Blythe did not want either me or Kent to have anything to do with her as she went around with Lilly and Emma Bradford, and we agreed that she was old enough to go with them without parental supervision if they stayed within the ward boundaries.  They agreed and after eating a hot dog at the Hill's across the street, went on their way.  Brandt had asked that Kent or I accompany him and Paul Moreland around the neighborhood, but then Jarom and Sam Oyler asked if he wanted to go trick-or-treating with them.  Aaron takes them up to their old neighborhood where there are lots of big houses and people who give away big stuff, so Brandt and Paul went with the Oylers, and Kent and I were off the hook with the exception of answering the door and handing out candy.  It was a nice evening visiting with neighbors and exclaiming over fun costumes.  The children returned with lots of candy and will likely eat it in the next three days (if it lasts that long).  Happy Halloween!

Colonial Days

Fifth grade has been a lot of fun for Brandt.  They have been learning about Colonial times over several weeks.  They have been earning Colonial cash for good behavior and in social studies.  They have been working towards a day of Colonial activity, and today was the day.  They could come in costume and then were able to participate in various party stuff including learning how to do square dancing, cat's cradle, quilting, they played games, went to school, did soap carving, and then had their picture taken in the stock.  I went to help and taught the kids how to do cat's cradle.  Brandt reports that it was a good time.  He liked it.  From my perspective, it did seem like a good time.  Hooray for fifth grade!  And hooray! for Rachel LaComb who took all the pictures.

This is cat's cradle, the string game.
It's tricky!

Dancing!
