Best Laid Plans

Because the bank is open until 6:00pm on Fridays, I get home late. Dinner preparation is always frustrating because we often are not eating until after 7:00 because no one else in the family feels like they can step in and make something we could all eat as soon as I got home.

Today, in an effort to prepare something in advance so dinner prep would be quick, I put a pork loin in the crock pot to cook. I thought I'd make a sweet and spicy sauce to cover it in and we could have sweet pork tacos or salads. In an effort to get things going, I turned the pork onto high to cook for the first hour, and then I intended on turning it to low as I walked out the door for work.

I forgot.

It was a busy day at work and I didn't make it home at lunch. Mikayla stopped by my house and was going to ask if she could make me dinner, but she saw the crock pot on the counter and was impressed I was so on top of things.

In reality, I wasn't. The pork loin was not huge, so over the course of the day, cooking on high, it became absolutely massacred. It was burnt, dry, and completely inedible. I was crushed when I got home, saw it was all a mess, and that I would need to start from scratch for dinner.

Sometimes, the best laid plans of mice and men are completely foiled.

Brandt Participates in Tech Olympics

Brandt had the opportunity to go to Cedar City with Drama and Choir groups to participate in the Shakespeare Festival for high school students. As a techie, Brandt got to participate in the Tech Olympics as well as hanging around on campus. As I was not there, Brandt will give a full and detailed-ish report about the weekend away.

Now Brandt:

The whole trip in general was boring. I feel bad that my parents had to pay the $300 to go down to Cedar City because I didn't do very much.

First day, the actors had to practice, the choir had to sing, but tech was just sitting around. I was bored but couldn't go anywhere without two other people. I think this is a dumb rule (not me, the mom), especially as I had cousins on campus and wanted to go hang out with them. I was so bored, I began asking college students if they wanted to play Uno with me. Finally, when a hot college chick said, "Sure!" everyone else wanted to play Uno. Just pointing that out. We played Uno, we talked, we had a good time. Tess came and visited me while we were waiting around. She brought me a breakfast burrito which was so good and chatted with me for a few minutes.

The first night we also got to watch MacBeth at the outdoor theater, but even though we had done MacBeth and I had seen it many times, I was totally confused by their production. There was a random baby and other stuff I didn't understand at all.

Day two was kind of the same thing. Instead of sitting around, I convinced people to go wander around with me. We went to the SUU bookstore which sold daggers and miniature knives. Everyone bought one but me. I wanted to save my money so I didn't buy one. Everyone else was so proud they got a sword. Charlie texted me and I met up with him. He told me that Grandpa George had a folder at SUU. I took two other people and met Charlie at the library to see the folder. They were probably bored, but I thought it was super interesting. Turns out, Grandpa had something to do with the SUU mascot. Because he was in advertising, he had something to do with it which I don't remember.

After that, we got to participate in the Tech Olympics. The Olympics were good. I got third place in my category. There was a measurement thing on a piece of paper you had to mark and Spuney did that. You had to make a light go into a certain shape. You had to dress someone in a costume a certain way. There was one about props where you had to memorize where they went. There was rigging you had to tie different knots in. Some actors showed up, but they just sat around and talked. Only two actors cheered us on which was really nice.

For sound, you had to hook up a microphone to a mixer and the mixer to a speaker and you had to have your voice come out. You had to have someone else turn on the speaker which was so dumb, and I think I would have gotten second place or maybe even first if I had said, "Turn the speaker on." I did it and then wrapped a cable for minus ten seconds. Tess and Charlie showed up to watch me which was really nice.

Third place for sound.
That's a bronze medal.
You might wonder how Landon was able to do anything in less than a second.
You got a ten second reduction in time if you properly wrapped a cable.
Brandt did and got ten seconds off his time too.

The last day, actors had to go early to practice and techies were going to go later. Turns out, all the techies went with the actors and I was the only one left behind. I went with the choir kids who were also down there to perform and they were funner than the actors. They all wanted to get daggers at the bookstore, but as I had already gone there, I got "lost" and went and wandered around on my own. I went up to the roof of the science building and played cards in the sun for a while. I thought I was locked outside, but I really wasn't. I got texted by Ruth who asked where I was and I said, "I'm stuck on a roof somewhere alone. Don't tell Avila." She didn't. I found out the door wasn't locked, so I was able to join the group again. I met up with some techies, Lexie, Ruth, and Diana, and we had lunch. I got to see Charlie one more time at lunch. There was an award show but we didn't win anything. Then we drove home.

Bus ride down to Cedar City.
Brandt is wearing a hat he bought at a gas station.
The hat says, "God, Guns, and Guts Made America. Let's keep all three here."

Tess or Charlie sent me video of Brandt competing, but I don't have that anymore.

BYU Football on Zions Bank

Amy Morris, my former Branch Manager, got tickets through work to today's BYU football game. Zions Bank donates money to BYU Football, or maybe just to BYU in general, and so Nick, our Region President, will sometimes disburse tickets to managers. Amy got them for today's game and invited me to join her and her daughter and son-in-law. I love Amy, I miss working with and for her, and I was delighted to invited to spend the evening with her.

Football tickets on Zions Bank is more than just tickets to the game. We had a delicious pre-game dinner in a large tent on the east side of the stadium. There was a large and varied salad bar, then different stations with meats and sides, then a dessert bar that included a chocolate fountain, and a scone station with honey butter and jam. There were so many choices and all of it was yummy. We sat on the east side of the stadium in chairs with backs under which was a zippered bag with a candy bar, water bottle, and a coupon for either a drink or a cougar tail (a 16-inch maple bar). At half-time, we returned to the tent for mid-game snacks of nachos, hotdogs, and popcorn. Then, as if that wasn't enough, at 11:00pm, as the third quarter was coming to a close, they passed small containers of BYU ice cream down each row for everyone to eat. I turned to Amy, ice cream covered spoon in hand and said, "I am not at all hungry and eating ice cream at 11:00 at night is ridiculous, but I'm eating it anyway."

The football game itself was super fun. BYU won 38-24 against Wyoming, and all that scoring meant lots of excitement. BYU scored every quarter so we stood to sing the fight song many times. There is always music and activity and yelling and high energy. I imagine it's our equivalent of ancient Roman battles in the Colosseum. It was great to be with Amy, to talk and catch up, and to have it all be on the Company dime.

Playing at the Park

I took Cora, Kal, Cora, Thea, and Freya over to play on the equipment at Rock Canyon. They all brought a wheeled something, too, so they zipped and zoomed around. Kila came too. It was all a party.

At the park, the kids took their wheeled something, either scooter or wiggle car, way up the sidewalk, nearly to Timpview Drive, then came careening down the sidewalk, zooming so fast I was convinced they were going to crash and we would end up at the ER. I was also certain the dog was going to be run over as she kept barking at the kids and trying to run after/into them. Someone was getting hurt. But the sun shone down brilliantly and no one was injured.

They went so far up the sidewalk and then raced down,
popping out in to the playground.

PHS Football

After decades away, Kent and I returned to Provo High School. It hasn't really been decades; we went to an All-Class Reunion before the original Provo High was being  turned over to BYU. And then we weren't really "returning" because we went to the new Provo High in west Provo, close to the lake. That said, we went to watch Crew and Giffin play football. It was a beautiful evening, the Dudes played well and won, and it was fun to sit in the stands and cheer on the Bulldogs, the mighty, mighty Bulldogs. Brandt came along and cheered, even though he is a T-Bird. For family, we'll set aside cross-town rivalries.

Last Snow Cones of the Season

Summer is coming to a close as evidenced by the closing for the season of Hokulia, our nearby snow cone shack. As today was the last day, I suggested to Mikayla we go to snow cones. We all went for a cold, sweet, tasty treat.

A Little Walk

Mikayla is the PTA President this year (she does it all) and has been involved in PTA stuff at the start of school all week. As a result, I have been going over early and helping get the kids ready for school. I have walked over with them all, delivering the "big" kids to school and the littles to Mikayla.

Today, after our delivery, Freya did not want me to leave her. She clung to me. She held me tight as I held her. I miss all the littles!

Tech Crew at THS

Brandt sent me a bunch of Tech Crew pictures and Blythe feels strongly that all these pictures should be preserved for posterity. I'm not sure they need to be, but it's family history and Tech Crew has been a significant part of high school for both kids, so here are lots of techie pictures.
