Science Palooza

Each year the city hosts a science palooza at the rec center.  It's a super fun event, with all sorts of science related hands-on activities and experiments.  Brandt and Blythe love going.  This year we took Lilly and Emma Bradford with us, mostly because Blythe was playing with them when we were leaving, and she asked if they could come.  I'll let the pictures do most of the talking about what we did.

Petting, "with only two fingers," a corn snake.

This year there was a whole Frozen room, complete with lots of fun "snow" related activities.  The kids raced Frozen characters attached to ice cubes down this race track and discussed friction, they scooped up dry ice bubbles, cut out snowflakes, and threw snowballs at a giant Marshmallow.

These pictures are from the movie section.  Brandt posed with Harry Potter, and then they all stood in front of a green screen with pieces of green sheeting and hid/revealed themselves on the movie screen.  The girls also sang along to "Let It Go!" and then listened to themselves synced with the movie.

We went into another section where we got a scoop of ice cream from Sub Zero, created through the magic of chemistry, with milk instantly frozen with liquid nitrogen at -321 degrees Fahrenheit in a cloud of smoke.  It's gastronomic science.  The kids watched sound waves rippling open flame, saw the liquefaction of watery soil following an earthquake, looked at bits of cool rocks through a microscope, had their heart listened to, and learned you should brush your teeth for two minutes.  They also constructed Lego cars and challenged someone else's creation to see who had the toughest one.  So much fun, all in one place!

Small flames above, but much bigger flames below.
