Kal Goes to the Hospital

Today, Mikayla brought over a quilting project that we were going to work on together.  She made blankets for Brick and Cora some time ago, but needed to bind them somehow.  She wanted to use yarn and big stitches, and I was certainly willing to help her.  We had the quilting frames, the yarn, and the blankets, but it turned out, I didn't have any needles.  Fortunately, Day's Market, less than a mile away, did.  I went over to buy them, and while I was at it, I bought a package of three needle threaders.  I thought they would make the needle set-up easier.

Turns out, the needle threaders were not sturdy enough to handle the yarn.  It was just too thick.  Mikayla and I both broke off the small wire attached to the threaders the first time we used them.  We were sitting on the couch quilting, with bits of yarn between us, and Kal playing at our feet.  I had vacuumed to remove all the bits of debris off the floor, and we were trying to keep everything else out of reach so he didn't choke on anything.

Unfortunately, we were not vigilant enough.  Standing by the side of the couch, under the quilting frames, Kal found one of those small pieces of wire on the couch and swallowed it.  He began choking and Mikayla tried to fish whatever it was in his mouth/throat out, but all to no avail.  We realized what it likely was, and Mikayla called Dr. Lauret's office.  They said, "Go to the ER."  So off Mikayla went, leaving me with Brick and Cora.

An x-ray showed the tiny piece of wire had lodged horizontally in Kal's throat, would not pass naturally on its own, and would need to be removed surgically.  Fortunately for one and all, the surgery was very quick, Kal did great, and everyone came home just after 8:00pm.  But it certainly did make for a tense afternoon/evening.

We also hardly got any quilting done.

I took all four kids to the eye doctor (appointments for Brandt and Blythe) which wasn't a treat, and then we stopped at Chik-fil-a for dinner.  I left Brandt and Blythe with Kent and took Brick and Cora home for baths.  They played and played in the water, splashing so much water out of the tub I eventually enclosed them inside.  They still worked really hard to throw out most of the bath toys over the top of the shower doors.  It was a crazy afternoon, with crazy little people, and we're certainly glad that our littlest little person is just fine.

Naked nudies in the tub.
