Double Digits

Ten years ago today, after waiting a really, really, really long time, Kent and I became parents.  Brandt joined our family.  We were happy, happy, happy, blissfully so, amazed at the great blessing that Heavenly Father gave us.  Ten years!  It's just remarkable that Brandt was hit double digits.  The time has passed quickly, though sometimes the days seem long.  As the kids' birthdays approach, they almost always ask us to tell us the story of how they came to our family, and it is always fun for us to remember.

I sort of feel badly that Brandt's birthday comes just two days after Independence Day because I am always wiped out from all the early-morning-late-night celebrating, and I don't give his birthday enough forethought.  Fortunately, Brandt always has very low expectations (one of his more positive traits), and I can usually throw something together.  The day went well, filled with things Brandt wanted, but none of them too taxing.

Brandt asked for french toast for breakfast, and we all ate well to start the day.  He also opened his presents from us which included a BB and pellet gun (very fancy!) and ammo to shoot, a Lego set from Blythe, a stunt drone, some new church shirts with ties.  He was happy with his gifts and went outside to fly the drone immediately.  We went to an early showing of Finding Dory because last week, when the rest of us went to see it, Brandt was at Webelos' camp and missed it.  He made me promise we would see it on his birthday.  We met Kent, Lee, and Aaron for lunch at Panda (again Brandt's choice), and came home for some playing.  Brandt requested cornbread for dinner which made for two meals with the main dish smothered in buttermilk syrup.  Oh well.  It's his birthday.

This year, Brandt wanted to have a late-over and play night games for his birthday party.  We invited cousins, Paul Moreland, and Jarom and Sam Oyler.  He wanted donuts for the treat and I bought him an extra-large one to hold candles, and then made lemonade to go with the donuts.  Super easy.  People arrived, we opened presents, we sang and had treats, then I turned the kids loose in the front yard to do their thing while the adults sat on the back porch and visited.  It was a beautiful evening, Brandt got lots of Legos, and the day ended well.  Hoorah for turning ten!

Brandt is a great kid.  He is sometimes behaving like a teenager, somewhat defiant and disobedient, asserting his independence.  But he is still so kind to others and is willing to help with projects, though not if they involve cleaning.  He loves to read, play with Legos, and watch TV, particularly old shows like Batman and Superman, the Lone Ranger, the Rifleman, and Zorro.  He still likes Phineas and Ferb and the Kratt Brothers.  He loves to play with his friends and is very creative and imaginative.  He'll almost always play a game with me, and will still snuggle and let me give him little kisses.  He likes Primary and his teachers, his dad, and money, and he enjoys teasing his little sister.  I suppose that's the way it is with older brothers.  He is growing taller and filling out, getting broad through the shoulders and thighs.  He is strong and sometimes hurts us without realizing he is.  I can't really wrestle with him anymore because he doesn't know his own strength.  We are so grateful Brandt is our boy and look forward to seeing what the next ten years hold.  But no rush!

A too powerful BB gun.
Kent wasn't with me when I bought it.
Brandt may not be able to shoot it except at the gun range.

A birthday donut, complete with 10 candles.

The boys, all working on putting together Legos.

Post posting:  The gun I bought Brandt was a bit too powerful.  It can shoot up to 500 yards, a bit too far for a 10 year old boy looking to kill cans and boxes in the yard.  So we gave him a Daisy BB gun that Maureen was getting rid of and gave to us.  It is just the ticket.  He can shoot all sorts of things, and as long as he's in the backyard shooting away from the vinyl fence and the house, we're comfortable with him using it.  Here are he and Blythe shooting boxes.
