The Mini Dies

We have known that we were living on borrowed time with the Mini. The transmission has been not working very well, and Kent determined that it would be too much money to replace. The car wasn't worth the cost. So really, we've just been waiting for it to give out. I have been hopeful that it would last a little longer, but today it died.  Kent pulled the mini out of the garage, reversed to the bottom of the driveway, pulled out into the cul-de-sac, and the transmission gave out.

I was out last night with Isabella, Mila, and Vika, and it was working fine. However, it made a strange grinding crunching noise when we pulled into the garage after the volleyball game, and apparently that was the giving up of the ghost. When Kent tried to move the car over to the curb, out of the somewhat middle of the cul-de-sac, the front wheels would not turn at all. We could go neither forward nor backward. I sent a text message to our cul-de-sac neighbors to tell them that although the car was somewhat in the middle of the road, that's where it was going to have to stay for a little bit.

Kent went and bought some four wheeled dollies and we jacked the front tires of the car up so that we could rest them on the dollies. With the front tires off the road, we were able to push the car over to the curb, leaving it in front of the mailbox.

The dying of the car today was a tender mercy. Because of Brandt's car wreck in August, we have not wanted him to drive the Lexus any further than Timpview, and even then, it has been dicey. He has had to work several times in Salt Lake, so he has taken the Mini. Kent and I have worried the transmission would go on the freeway and have been relieved each time Brandt made it home. We have been looking for a new car and oddly enough, we were on our way to buy one this morning when the transmission gave out. The Mini lasted exactly as long as it needed to and not one day more. Heavenly Father was watching out for all of us.

Kent and I drove the truck instead of the Mini to pick up our new car, and we will begin the search anew for another car. I'm sad the Mini is no longer drivable. I have really enjoyed its zippiness and easy handling. I shall miss our red Fiona.

Post edit: the car remain in front of the mailbox for some weeks until Kent was able to sell. The man who bought it had a wrecked Mini, the transmission of which worked but needed a Mini whose body was fine. He was happy to get it and I was stunned that it sold.

Farewell Fiona!
