Spring Break Day 5

The kids have been bugging me about going on the train to "That place where they have the helicopter and all the balls in the tubes." They have wanted to go for a field trip Friday, but to get to Salt Lake and back in an afternoon with a visit to the Discovery Museum thrown in, there isn't enough time. So I've been telling them we would go during spring break.

Today was that day. We invited cousins to join us, but because of sickness in Eugene's family, only Tysen and her kids came.  And then when it came right down to it, only Crew and Griffin joined us on the train; Tysen drove with Lyla, Rowan, and Ava.  The train ride was great.  We played games and had snacks and watched the scenery race past.  We all really like the train.  It's a comfortable, low-stress way to travel (when you can actually get on the train when you need to.  More on this later).  We caught Trax and only two shorts stops later, were at the museum.

I was trying to take a picture of everyone on Trax.
Brandt's head got in the way.

The kids ran around playing wildly.  Brandt, Crew, and Griffin worked at completely clearing out the entire contents of the grocery store, running all the fake food up and down the conveyor belt or loading it into the farm truck.  They created a huge mess, but as "clean up is part of play" I made sure they did a lot of that too.

I love that Rowan is in on the action.

Lyla stood at the checkout counter and scanned items for a really, really long time.  Blythe and Ava brought her baskets of food and then reshelved them.  Blythe and Ava ran back and forth from the water feature to the store, always actively engaged in some creative something.

This is a whole lot of food in the back of the farm truck.
Crew is adding more.

We went upstairs and played with the pulley system, flew the helicopter, delivered some news, and experience hurricane force winds.

While the wind was howling around them,
Brandt was screaming.
No reason; just screaming.
I suppose he was trying to make it more realistic, as if it had been a real hurricane,
he would have been screaming.

After lots of playing, we walked across the street for some lunch.  We ate at Panda; we always do when we go to the Discovery Museum.  When we were done, the girls were done too.  They wanted to go home, but the boys all wanted to play at the museum some more.  As we were riding the train, Tysen took Ava, Lyla, Rowan, and Blythe home, and I stayed on with the boys.  Who wants to stop having so much fun?

Mr. Mail

We left the museum in plenty of time to catch Trax to take us back to the Frontrunner station and head home.  I made sure we timed it right so that we wouldn't miss the train which only runs once an hour.  I didn't want to have to wait a super long time with the kids, so I rounded them up and we went out to catch Trax.  We waited and waited and waited, well past the time it should have come.  Another man waiting near us was consulting his phone and watching the live time feed.  Trax got hung up about three stops before ours, and was standing still for really a long time.  I was getting more and more anxious, wondering what, if anything, we could do, short of sprinting six blocks to the Frontrunner station.  Trax finally came, but not soon enough.  We pulled into the station about a minute and a half too late.

This meant we had to wait for an hour for the next train.  Unfortunately, there was no bathroom anywhere, no drinking fountain, and no way to get anywhere else to wait.  Fortunately, it was a beautiful afternoon, not too hot, and we had games to play, so we sat down on the ground and waited.  The boys were good sports and didn't complain at all.  Three cheers for them.  We continued our game playing on the train after our wait, and in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't too bad.  And the extra hour was great for Blythe who got to continue playing with Ava longer.
