Seers and Cheers

My good friend Christine Baird does a fun thing with her grandkids each Conference weekend.  For each prophet/seer, they have a treat.  When the seer speaks, they give a cheer and get to eat the treat.  Looking for some way to engage my kids in General Conference, we tried this in October.  It was successful insofar as the kids would run into the family room every so often and ask if whoever was speaking was a treat.  They were outside most of the weekend playing.

This go round, I wasn't planning on doing treats, but three days ago, when Kent was talking to Blythe about what we were doing this weekend, she said, "Oh! When we get a treat when someone talks? Do we get to do that again? Do we? Do we?"

Yes, I suppose we do.

I contacted Christine to get her list again, and I prepared a basket of goodies to have when we each prophet speaks.  Unlike in October, this conference, the children stuck around much more, playing with Legos and other things in the family room as Kent and I listened.  We had snacks as each prophet spoke, and were spiritually fed as well (even better than physically!)  Yeah for Conference and living prophets!

And just in case you (meaning the three people who read this blog) are interested in what snack we had for each seer, here is the list.

President Monson:  Swedish fish, because he's of Swedish descent.
President Eyring: O'Henry! candy bar.
President Uchtdorf: pretzels because he's German
Elder Packer: fruit snacks because he's from Brigham City (fruit highway)
Elder Perry: long licorice, because he's tall
Elder Nelson: apple, because he's a doctor
Elder Oaks: nuts, because oaks grow from acorns which are nuts
Elder Ballard: M&Ms for M. Russell
Elder Scott: shortbread because he's a "Scot"
Elder Hales: donut holes, switch o for a in Hales
Elder Holland: cheese, like Dutch
Elder Bednar: pickles, because of his parable of the pickle
Elder Cook: cookie of your choice
Elder Christofferson: gold fish, because he was an attorney for banking companies
Elder Anderson: milk, because he worked on a diary farm as a youth

*edit since several members of the Quorum of the Twelve have died.
Elder Rasband: raspberries
Elder Stevenson: Wheat Thins because he was presiding bishop, wheat storage
Elder Renlund: 100 Grand because he's the 100th apostle
