A Night Of Broadway

Months ago, Blythe came home and said, “I think I want to do something out of my comfort zone. I want to try out for the school musical.” I was thrilled, remembering all the fun I had when doing school musicals, and helped her prepare her audition recording. She was chosen to participate and rehearsals began in February. Because of Covid restrictions, rather than doing a large production, students were divided into small groups that performed just one number from a Broadway show, with each student in two songs. Blythe was part of “Mama Says” from Footloose, and “Teamwork” from Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. She faithfully attended her rehearsals, met new people and made friends, and was excited for performances that began this past week. We were excited to see her perform, too.

We wanted to have someone in the audience each performance so Blythe knew someone was cheering her on. We went as a family to the first performance, Grandma Sue, Grandma Dawn, McKenna, and Grayson came the second night, DeMartinis, Keyaira, and Aunt Goose and Ashe came the third night. We all went for cazookies at The Chocolate afterward and laughed and laughed together as we celebrated Blythe’s performance. The last night, I went alone but cheered extra loudly.

Because of Covid-19, we had been told that all performers would have to wear a mask on stage. This was sad. We attended Luke’s Night of Broadway performance where everyone had to wear a mask, and even with microphones, it was super hard to hear the kids singing. But shortly before dress rehearsals, the district agreed that performers didn’t have to wear their masks while onstage, as long as they wore them offstage when not actually performing. We were so glad we could see and hear the kids as they sang and danced.

We liked Blythe’s numbers. Although they both had lead soloists, everybody got to sing. Blythe was an enthusiastic performer, sang and danced well, and had wonderful stage presence. We hope she continues to participate in theatrical productions.

Elizabeth Stovall and Emma Bradford came with us on opening night.
