Cedar City Weekend

We made a quick trip to Cedar City this weekend.  So quick, we were gone only 28 hours.  We didn't make it to the Shakespeare Festival during the summer, but they were doing The Foreigner, a play Kent and I have been before and love, and that we knew the children would love, too.  They like going to Cedar City for cultural experiences, so we decided to go this weekend, see two plays, and then come home.  There is the added bonus of having Annie, Charlie, and Tess all at school at SUU, and we knew we could see them and spend some time with them, and that would be wonderful, too.

Although we had intended to leave right after school, at 3:00, Brandt has his first every school dance yesterday, so we delayed our departure until 4:00.  We drove down to Cedar, with a stop in Beaver for dinner at Wendy's.  It breaks up the travel and I know the children will eat chicken nuggets.  The play started at 8:00 and we arrived with just enough time to get tickets, go to the bathroom, and find our seats.

The Foreigner really is a hilarious play.  The man who plays Charlie, the lead character, did a fantastic job, it was exciting and funny, and we all laughed and laughed.  I told the children it would be the funniest play they had ever seen, and it was.  We all loved it.  The children have been repeating lines from it since it finished.

Charlie, the shy guy who doesn't want to have to interact with anyone.

This breakfast scene with the characters dancing with cups on their heads has been reenacted at our house several times since we've been home.

"Gonna look into your bones when the bees come down!"

One of the lines, when Charlie is making fun of his friend Froggy, is
"I cover my nipples with cheese nips."
On the way home in the car, Brandt sent this drawing with the text to him friend.
The friend obviously had no idea what it meant, but Brandt thought it was hilarious.
Me, too, quite frankly.
Not the line so much as the boy.

In the morning, we had breakfast at the hotel and then went to the SUU homecoming parade.  While we aren't really interested in homecoming at SUU as none of us has attended school there, Tess and her boyfriend Jamison were marching in the parade representing the Chemistry department (or something), and we wanted to cheer them on.  We found a spot near the beginning, and tried to be enthusiastic parade watchers.  It was fairly easy as everyone was throwing candy.  We came away with a purse full of sugary goodness, and did get to cheer on Tess and Jamison.

That's Tess on the far side of the orange Corvette.
She didn't get any closer to us.

Jamison, however, came right over and gave the kids candy.
He was on the right side of the street.

After lunch, we went to have lunch all together.  Sadly for us, Annie was working and couldn't join us.  She works at a mortuary.  How funny is that?  Not really.  Death is sad.  Also, Charlie was in Salt Lake this weekend for a mission reunion, so we didn't see him either.  Because of homecoming, everything was crazy, but we were able to get a table at Pizza Factory and enjoyed pizza and salad.  We could hardly pull ourselves away from Tess and Jamison, but we had another play to see.

We had suggested to Craig and Monica that they come up from St. George and see the plays with us, and they opted to join us for the Saturday matinee.  Then it was all driving in the light and reasonable hours, rather than late at night in the dark.  So we met them for our second play, The Liar.  While it is also a comedy, we discovered it was a raunchy comedy, totally inappropriate for the children, and maybe inappropriate for us adults, too.  The premise of the story was amusing, but it was really racy.  At intermission, Blythe said to me, "Mom, I don't understand what's going on."  "Good!" was my reply.  Live and learn.  And read the reviews more carefully.

After the play, we dropped the kids off at Tess and Annie's apartment and went to dinner with Craig and Monica.  We had a much more civilized dinner without the children, and they had much more fun with Tess than they would have had at dinner.  Win win! We had a very nice visit with them and enjoyed Cafe Rio, while the children had a great time with Tess and Jamison.  They didn't want to leave when the moment arrived.

The children had been really good most of the trip, but sort of fell apart the last hour of the drive.  I had been reading aloud a book called The Wishtree, but Blythe said she was tired of it, so I stopped.  Then they got super froggy in the backseat, and irritated us deliberately.  Sigh.  All in all, however, it was a good trip.

Blythe and Henry Five.
"We few. We happy few!"

And again I say, "We few. We happy few!"
