Our Last Day in Columbia

After our late night, there was late sleeping in again.  So beautiful!  It is very quiet in the Brinkerhoff neighborhood, the children are in a room with no windows, and so everyone slept and slept.  We had a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs and twisty bacon, and George was able to join us at the table.  He doesn't have much to say, but to have him strong enough to sit with us was a treat.

We had a leisurely morning.  We did move some furniture the Brinkerhoffs are giving away, and we sat with George, and did lots more talking.  It has been a sweet visit.  George is thin and weak and in pain, but Michelle and Tad take such good care of him.  We are so glad we decided to come.  Kent has been with his dad most of the time we've been here, just sitting with him, or rubbing his feet, or holding his hand.  Kent is reading The Monuments Men, and he and George watched the movie based on the book.  It's not been a rush rush vacation, but has been so meaningful now, at the end of George's life.

This afternoon we took the kids, plus Lydia and Kate, to the ARC (activity and recreation center) for a swim.  They have an indoor pool with waterslide, lazy river, and pool.  We left Tess in charge.  She was a bit nervous as we had spent some time this afternoon exchanging horror stories about children nearly drowning or being hit by a car or all the other hazards of childhood.  Tad, Michelle, Kent, and I all went for Indian food which was absolutely delicious!!  Downtown Columbia and the university district is lovely; a delightful little town.

We got home and all the adults had a nap (we were up so late talking!) while the kids had more screen time.  Oh, so much screen time this summer! (Groaning and rolling of the eyes.)  Late in the day Michelle and I took the kids to Laser Lanes, a fun center where they rode bumper cars, played arcade games, and did laser tag.  Brandt and Kate beat Lydia and Blythe, but they all had a good time.  We had a late dinner of hot dogs and chips, and then an even later run to Andy's for one more custard treat.  We leave in the morning which makes us all sad.

Lydia braided Blythe's hair.
It looks lovely!

Here follows really bad pictures of bumper cars.
It was dark, they were moving, the camera wasn't fast enough.
It was wildly fun though.

More creepy Brandt eyes
