Brandt's 15th Birthday

Brandt turned fifteen today, but not until 5:16pm. We had a discussion about what time the children were born, and because Brandt was born in the evening, he didn’t let us officially call him fifteen until dinnertime. In spite of that, we celebrated all day, as much as Brandt wanted to celebrate. I made him his favorite breakfast of French toast when he finally got up. We were sort of putzing around when Blythe turned on Big Hero Six, and we all sat and watched together, even though we’d already seen it. Brandt had a bit of lunch then went off to play ultimate Frisbee. He was fairly keen on doing presents when he got home, but I made him wait until Kent returned from work. He had asked for lasagna for dinner, which I made and which he ate up. We didn’t do a cake because he just wanted homemade ice cream from yesterday for his birthday treat. I asked earlier in the day if he wanted to swim, and so after dinner, in the company of Jarom and Sam Oyler and Luke, Zach, and Elizabeth Stovall, we went over to Grandma Sue’s for a dip and shaved ice. While none of that sounds super celebratory, Brandt is a boy of low expectation and demand, so it was fine.

Brandt continues to be a pleasant joy to have around. He is always willing to help me, Kent, neighbors and friends, and even strangers. He works hard, is strengthening his testimony, and loves the gospel. He has taken charge of our weekly church Zoom connection, is working for Jim Cutler as a pool/yard boy, and can’t wait to get back to school so he can resume his tech crew responsibilities. He has a financial literacy class he is doing through summer school, and he works on it daily. He is so funny and charming, still likes to sit on my lap (big-time squish for me), and wants to be good. He is now old enough to get his learner’s permit and do some driving, but he’s been hesitant to really get behind the wheel because both of our cars are manual transmissions, and clutching and shifting make him very nervous. We need to work on that more.

We love our boy and are so happy he’s part of our family.

I needed to redo the monthly calendar, but Jarom got there first!
