In a strange celestial phenomenon, the Northern Lights have been seen as far south as us. I've seen people's pictures all over social media, with skies filled with green, pink, and purple light. Kent has always wanted to see the Northern Lights, so I suggested we go out tonight and try and see them. They were going to be visible late, starting around midnight, and Kent wasn't super keen to go out and try and find somewhere dark enough to see. But I pointed out that it was a lot less work to drive up the canyon in Alpine to get away from city lights than it would be to go to Alaska, so he agreed to give it a try.
We drove up the canyon where I delivered packages when I was working for UPS. It's way up into a sparsely habited area, with lots of vacant land around, and little ambient light. Izzy came with us, and we hoped it would be clear enough to see something. We arrived around midnight, then sat in the car, peering up at the sky, hoping to see something colorful. We stayed for an hour. We saw only dark night sky, periodically shrouded by clouds. No color at all. We left when the clouds rolled in and obscured anything we might have seen.
It was terribly disappointing. We tried again on Sunday, driving less far. We just went down by the lake, away from houses, but not all that far. I had heard you needed to look at the sky through your phone camera, so I took lots of pictures of the horizon, hoping something would show up. It didn't. I guess we'll just have to go to Alaska to see the lights.
Waiting in the car
Lights of northern Utah County, but nothing exciting in the sky.
