Biking with Mikayla

In January, the lottery opened for Little Red Riding Hood, a women's only bike ride I have done for many years. I mentioned this to Mikayla who said she wanted to try and do it with me this year. In spite of her messed up ankle and knees, she is wanting to be more active, and biking is an exercise she might be able to do. Biking helps keep your knees lubricated and is low impact. We signed up and were selected.

The fewest number of miles you can ride at Little Red is seventeen. I told Mikayla with a bit of training she would be able to ride that far. But we did need to do a bit of training. She also needed a different bike. We found a terrific bike on KSL from somebody who lived here in Provo, and in April we began riding a bit together.

We have not gone far in these initial rides. The goal has been to get Mikayla's tender bits toughened up, and to put a few miles on the bike. We have tried to go places that are not hilly, so we have often just biked up Timpview Drive and back down Canyon Road.

These rides have not been easy on Mikayla. I admire her pluck and determination to bike through the pain. Today she held on for 12 miles. She collapsed in pain when we got back to her house, but she carried on. I am confident she will be able to bike the full seventeen miles next month.
